Question: Analyze the concept of the asiatic mode of production as stated by karl marx?
Karl Marx's concept of the Asiatic Mode of Production, which he first developed in his early writings of the late 1840s, was a reaction to the core of socialist thought of 19th century Europe. Marx suggested that the materialist conception of social development he had developed would require the revision of certain assumptions, such as the inevitability of capitalist development. He argued that certain "Asiatic societies" existed outside of this progression, where non-bourgeois modes of production (i.e. ancient and feudal) had endured.
The Asiatic Mode of Production, as conceived by Marx, is characterized by so-called 'Oriental Despotism': large-scale, centralized agricultural societies in which irrigation systems and state-led, communal production held precedence. He hypothesized that the socioeconomic mechanisms of such societies could revolve around the appropriation of surplus labour (or, basically, the surplus value of what is produced). He suggested that, in avoiding the necessity of capitalist exploitation, these societies might provide a blue-print for a post-capitalist world.
