Question: Explain valence bond theory with example?
Valence bond theory is a model used to explain covalent bond formation between two atoms. It postulates that the bonding in a molecule occurs through the overlap of atomic orbitals between the two atoms. For example, when two hydrogen atoms combine to form hydrogen molecule (H2), the valence bond theory states that each hydrogen atom contributes one atomic orbital to the formation of the molecular orbital. The overlap of the two atomic orbitals results in the formation of one bonding molecular orbital and one antibondingorbital, thus forming a bond.
