Question: State a challenging situation that you have encountered in your personal/professional life and what were the two major lessons learnt?
One challenging situation I have encountered in my professional life was when the company I was working for restructured and the decision had been made to let go of some of the employees. It was difficult to be the messenger delivering such news while also having to inform colleagues who were now out of work.
The two lessons I learnt were to notice emotion before delivering news, as well as putting myself in the shoes of the receiver. When delivering news that could have a large impact on someone’s life, understanding the emotion attached made a tremendous difference in the conversation. It showed I had both compassion and empathy for the situation. As well, trying to put myself in their shoes made me more aware of the different points of views each person had. Being able to respect that allowed for a more fluid conversation.
