Question: Why does the brahmaputra in its tibetan part have less silt despite a longer course?
The Brahmaputra in its Tibetan part has less silt for a few reasons. Firstly, the river mainly flows through high altitudes and cold areas which leads to a lower rate of erosion from its banks and sides. Secondly, the river has more steep gradients and faster flows which allow it to move more water faster, meaning less time for it to pick up silt and sediment. Finally, the Tibetan plateau generally has less land that is prone to erosion, so there is less sediment available in the first place.
