Question: Explain the process of inspiration under normal conditions?
Under normal conditions, the process of inspiration is typically initiated by the diaphragm muscle in the body. As the diaphragm contracts, it moves downward, decreasing the volume within the pleural cavity. This increased negative pressure draws air into the lungs through the airways. As air enters the lungs, the intercostal muscles in the chest wall contract and the rib cage moves outward and upward, helping to bring even more air into the lungs. Oxygen in the air then diffuses across the alveolar walls in the lungs into the capillary network and is passed on to the rest of the body.
