Question: Explain why the gymnosperms are said to be better adapted to terrestrial than the ferns?
Gymnosperms are better adapted to terrestrial habitats than the ferns because they have adaptations that enable them to conserve water, such as having an impermeable, waxy coating on their leaves to prevent water loss, along with other secondary adaptations to conserve water which allow them to survive in dry and harsher conditions. Additionally, gymnosperms have modified roots, specialized stems, and leaves that are reduced in size and made more efficient to support growth in challenging environments. Lastly, the seeds produced by gymnosperms allow them to spread their geographical range over large distances. Ferns, on the other hand, have lacked these adaptations and are largely confined to moist habitats.
