Question: Explain the amphoteric behaviour of amino acids?
Amino acids exhibit amphoteric behavior because they contain both acidic (carboxyl) and basic (amino) functional groups within the same molecule. In an acidic environment, the carboxyl group can donate a proton to act as a weak acid, while in a basic environment, the amino group can accept a proton to act as a weak base. The ability of amino acids to act as both acids and bases allows them to participate in a variety of biochemical reactions and to play critical roles in protein structure and function.
