One form of gender based violence that is existent within my community is **sexual violence**. Sexual violence is any sexual act or attempt to obtain a sexual act by violence or coercion, unwanted sexual comments or advances, acts to traffic a person or acts directed against a person's sexuality, regardless of the relationship to the victim. Sexual violence can affect anyone – women, girls, men and boys – but women and girls are especially at risk. It can have serious and long-lasting consequences for the physical, mental and social well-being of survivors and their families. Sexual violence can occur in different settings, such as within the family or household, in schools or workplaces, in public spaces or during armed conflicts. Some of the factors that increase the risk of sexual violence in my community are gender inequality, harmful social norms, lack of awareness and education, poverty and lack of access to justice.
