Tropical cyclone Freddy is a developing storm system that formed in the South Pacific Ocean on June 23. According to the latest bulletin from the Fiji Meteorological Service, Freddy is currently a category 1 cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and gusts of up to 120 km/h. Freddy is moving southeast at 15 km/h and is expected to intensify further as it approaches the southern Cook Islands. The cyclone poses a threat to the islands of Aitutaki, Manuae, Mitiaro, Mauke and Atiu, where a gale warning is in effect. Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for strong winds, heavy rain and storm surges that could cause flooding and damage to property. Freddy is forecast to remain a category 1 or 2 cyclone until it reaches the French Polynesia on June 27, where it will likely weaken and dissipate.
