How did you distinguish between intentional and unintentional injuries?

Question: How did you distinguish between intentional and unintentional injuries?

In this blog post, I will explain how I distinguished between intentional and unintentional injuries in my research project on the epidemiology of trauma. Intentional injuries are those that occur out of harmful intent, either by oneself or by others, such as suicide, homicide, or violence. Unintentional injuries are those that occur without purposeful intent, such as accidents, falls, or poisoning. These two types of injuries have different causes, consequences, and prevention strategies.

To distinguish between intentional and unintentional injuries, I used a combination of methods, including:

- Reviewing the medical records of the injured patients and looking for clues such as the mechanism of injury, the location of injury, the presence of alcohol or drugs, and the history of mental health problems or previous violence.

- Interviewing the injured patients and their families or friends, if possible, and asking them about the circumstances of the injury, their relationship with the person who caused the injury, if any, and their emotional state before and after the injury.

- Consulting with other professionals involved in the care of the injured patients, such as doctors, nurses, social workers, or police officers, and obtaining their opinions on the intentionality of the injury.

- Applying standardized criteria and definitions for intentional and unintentional injuries based on the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes.

By using these methods, I was able to classify each injury as intentional or unintentional with a high degree of accuracy and reliability. This helped me to analyze the patterns and trends of trauma in my study population and to identify the risk factors and protective factors for each type of injury. It also helped me to suggest appropriate interventions and policies to prevent injuries and reduce their impact on health and well-being.
