Nigeria is a federal republic with three tiers of government: the federal government, the state governments and the local governments. However, many LGAs face challenges such as inadequate funding, corruption, political interference, poor infrastructure and insecurity. Some LGAs are also embroiled in boundary disputes with their neighbors, leading to conflicts and violence. There have been calls for reforms to improve the efficiency and accountability of the LGAs, as well as to create more LGAs to cater for the growing population and diversity of Nigeria.
