I will outline the reasons for choosing the five forms of assessment in 2.2, in relation to my phase, grade and subject. The five forms of assessment are: diagnostic, formative, summative, norm-referenced and criterion-referenced. I teach mathematics in the intermediate phase (grades 4-6).
Diagnostic assessment is used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of learners before starting a new topic or unit. It helps me to plan my lessons according to the learners' prior knowledge and skills, and to address any misconceptions or gaps in their understanding. For example, before teaching fractions, I use a diagnostic test to check their knowledge of equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions and comparing fractions.
Formative assessment is used to monitor the learners' progress and provide feedback during the teaching and learning process. It helps me to adjust my instruction according to the learners' needs and interests, and to support them in achieving the learning outcomes. For example, during a lesson on decimals, I use observation, questioning and mini-tasks to check their understanding of place value, rounding and ordering decimals.
