Explain the cause and effects of depletion of ozone layer?
Question: Explain the cause and effects of depletion of ozone layer?
The depletion of ozone layer is a serious environmental issue that affects the health and well-being of living organisms on Earth. The ozone layer is a thin layer of gas in the upper atmosphere that protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. The main cause of ozone layer depletion is the release of chemical compounds containing chlorine or bromine, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are used in refrigerators, air conditioners, aerosols, and solvents. These compounds break down in the stratosphere and release chlorine or bromine atoms that react with and destroy ozone molecules. One chlorine atom can destroy up to 100,000 ozone molecules. The effects of ozone layer depletion are severe and widespread. They include increased risk of skin cancer, eye cataracts, and immune system disorders in humans and animals, reduced crop yields and plant growth, damage to aquatic ecosystems and marine life, and increased global warming due to more UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface.
