As a first-generation college student from a low-income family, I have faced many challenges and obstacles in pursuing my academic goals. However, I have also learned valuable lessons and gained insights that have shaped my perspective and worldview. One of these lessons is the importance of diversity and collaboration in education.
I believe that a hallmark of the Columbia experience is being able to learn and thrive in an equitable and inclusive community with a wide range of perspectives. This resonates with me because I have witnessed how diversity and collaboration can enhance learning and foster innovation. For example, in my high school, I participated in a program that paired students from different backgrounds and interests to work on a capstone project. Through this experience, I was able to learn from my peers who had different skills, experiences and perspectives than me. We challenged each other, supported each other and created a product that was better than what we could have done individually.
At Columbia, I would like to continue to learn from and contribute to its diverse and collaborative community. I think that my perspective as a first-generation, low-income student would add value to the classroom discussions, group projects and extracurricular activities. I would also like to learn from the perspectives of other students who come from different cultures, disciplines and walks of life. I believe that by engaging with diverse ideas and viewpoints, I would be able to broaden my horizons, deepen my understanding and enrich my education.
