Fsu’s honors signature courses encourage curiosity; intellectual breadth; the ability to analyze and integrate knowledge across disciplines; and self-driven learning. design an honors signature course that includes these characteristics while addressing a societal problem or complex issue. name the course, describe the societal issue, and explain why it is important to you or your community. how would you engage with this issue as an honors student on our campus and beyond?

Climate Change and Human Health: An Interdisciplinary Approach
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, affecting not only the environment but also human health and well-being. The impacts of climate change on health are complex and multifaceted, ranging from increased exposure to heat stress, air pollution, vector-borne diseases, food insecurity, water scarcity, and mental stress. These impacts are likely to exacerbate existing health inequalities and vulnerabilities, especially among marginalized and disadvantaged populations.
As an honors student interested in public health and environmental justice, I would like to design an honors signature course that explores the connections between climate change and human health from an interdisciplinary perspective. The course would encourage curiosity, intellectual breadth, the ability to analyze and integrate knowledge across disciplines, and self-driven learning. The course would address the following questions:
- What are the main drivers and consequences of climate change?
- How does climate change affect human health at different scales and in different contexts?
- What are the ethical, social, and political implications of climate change for human health and well-being?
- How can we adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change on health using scientific, technological, policy, and behavioral solutions?
- How can we communicate effectively and engage with diverse stakeholders on climate change and health issues?
The course would be structured around four modules: (1) Climate Change Science and Impacts; (2) Climate Change and Health Risks; (3) Climate Change and Health Equity; and (4) Climate Change and Health Solutions. Each module would include lectures, readings, discussions, case studies, guest speakers, field trips, and assignments that would foster critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. The course would also include a capstone project that would require students to design and implement a research or action project on a specific topic related to climate change and health in their own community or beyond.
I believe this course would be relevant and meaningful for honors students who want to learn more about one of the most important issues of our time and how they can contribute to addressing it. The course would also prepare students for future academic and professional endeavors in various fields related to climate change and health. I hope this course would inspire students to become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens who can make a positive difference in the world.
