He also received the United Nations Public Service Award in 2013 for preventing and combating corruption in the public service.  


He was widely respected for his simplicity, honesty, accessibility and dedication to public service. He was also praised for his handling of various crises and challenges, such as the 2004 tsunami, the Mullaperiyar dam issue, the endosulfan tragedy and the 2015 Puttingal temple fire. He was a strong advocate of secularism, democracy and social justice. He was also a mentor to many young leaders in his party and a bridge-builder among different communities and groups.  


He is survived by his wife Mariamma Oommen, a retired bank employee, and three children - two daughters and a son. His son Chandy Oommen is also a politician and a lawyer. His funeral was attended by thousands of people from all walks of life, who paid their last respects to the departed leader.
