Oommen Chandy was the chief minister of Kerala from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2011 to 2016. He was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress and a popular figure in Kerala politics. He passed away on 18 July 2023 after battling cancer.   

He started his political career as a student leader and became a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1970. He held various portfolios in the state government, including finance, home, labour, law, irrigation and tourism. He became the chief minister for the first time in 2004, after A. K. Antony resigned. He led the United Democratic Front (UDF) to victory in the 2011 assembly elections and became the chief minister for the second time. He was known for his pro-people policies and initiatives, such as the mass contact programme, Kochi Metro, Kannur airport and Smart City project. He also received the United Nations Public Service Award in 2013 for preventing and combating corruption in the public service.  

He was widely respected for his simplicity, honesty, accessibility and dedication to public service. He was also praised for his handling of various crises and challenges, such as the 2004 tsunami, the Mullaperiyar dam issue, the endosulfan tragedy and the 2015 Puttingal temple fire. He was a strong advocate of secularism, democracy and social justice. He was also a mentor to many young leaders in his party and a bridge-builder among different communities and groups.  

He is survived by his wife Mariamma Oommen, a retired bank employee, and three children - two daughters and a son. His son Chandy Oommen is also a politician and a lawyer. His funeral was attended by thousands of people from all walks of life, who paid their last respects to the departed leader.
