How I Spent My Last Holiday: A Reflection

Holidays are a great opportunity to relax, recharge and reconnect with ourselves and others. They can also be a time to reflect on our achievements, challenges and goals for the future. In this essay, I will share how I spent my last holiday and what I learned from it.

I decided to take a solo trip to Japan for two weeks in December. I have always been fascinated by the culture, history and beauty of this country, and I wanted to experience it firsthand. I booked a flight, a hotel and a rail pass, and planned an itinerary that covered Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima.

The first thing that struck me when I arrived in Japan was the contrast between the modern and the traditional. In Tokyo, I saw skyscrapers, neon lights and bullet trains, but also temples, shrines and gardens. I enjoyed exploring the different districts, such as Shinjuku, Shibuya and Harajuku, where I could find anything from fashion to electronics to anime. I also visited some of the famous landmarks, such as the Tokyo Tower, the Imperial Palace and the Meiji Shrine.

In Kyoto, I felt like I stepped back in time. The city is known for its rich cultural heritage and preserved architecture. I visited some of the most beautiful temples and gardens in the world, such as the Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), the Kiyomizu-dera (Pure Water Temple) and the Ryoan-ji (Rock Garden). I also experienced a traditional tea ceremony, wore a kimono and learned about Zen Buddhism.

In Osaka, I had a lot of fun. The city is known for its lively atmosphere and delicious food. I went to the Dotonbori area, where I saw the famous Glico Man sign and tried some of the local specialties, such as takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (savory pancakes) and kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). I also visited the Osaka Castle, which is a symbol of the city's history and resilience.

In Hiroshima, I was moved by the history and the message of peace. The city was devastated by an atomic bomb in 1945, but has since rebuilt itself and become a center of education and activism. I visited the Peace Memorial Park, where I saw the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Children's Peace Monument and the Peace Memorial Museum. I also took a ferry to Miyajima Island, where I saw the Itsukushima Shrine and its famous floating torii gate.

My trip to Japan was an unforgettable experience that taught me a lot about myself and the world. I learned to appreciate the diversity and beauty of different cultures, to be more independent and adventurous, and to be more mindful and grateful for what I have. I also made some new friends along the way, who shared their stories and perspectives with me. I came back home feeling refreshed, inspired and ready for new challenges.
