Question: Describe the embarrassing experience of the narrator in the restaurant?
Have you ever had a moment when you wished the ground would swallow you up? I had one of those recently, and it happened in a very public place: a restaurant. Let me tell you what happened.
I was having lunch with a friend at a nice Italian place. We were chatting and enjoying our pasta, when I noticed a familiar face at the table next to us. It was my boss, who had taken the day off for some personal errands. He was with a woman who was not his wife. They looked very cozy and intimate, and I felt a surge of awkwardness.
I tried to avoid eye contact, hoping he wouldn't notice me. But of course, he did. He looked up and saw me staring at him. He gave me a sheepish smile and waved. I felt obliged to wave back, but I didn't know what to say. Should I pretend I didn't see anything? Should I make some small talk? Should I confront him about his affair?
Before I could decide, he got up from his seat and walked over to our table. He introduced the woman as his cousin, who was visiting from out of town. He said they were just catching up on family matters. He asked me how work was going, and if I had any questions or concerns. He acted as if nothing was wrong, and expected me to do the same.
I felt trapped in a lie. I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, but I didn't want to be rude. I smiled and nodded, trying to act casual. But I could tell he was nervous too. He kept glancing at his phone, as if waiting for a call from his wife.
Then, the worst thing happened. His phone rang, and it was his wife. He answered it, and tried to sound calm. But she must have sensed something was off, because she started asking him where he was and who he was with. He lied, saying he was at the office, working on a project. He said he couldn't talk long, and that he would call her back later.
But she didn't buy it. She raised her voice, demanding to know the truth. She said she had a feeling he was cheating on her, and that she had hired a private investigator to follow him. She said she had proof of his infidelity, and that she was going to divorce him.
He tried to deny it, but it was too late. She hung up on him, leaving him speechless. He looked at me with a panicked expression, as if begging me not to say anything. He looked at his cousin, who looked shocked and angry. He looked at his plate, which was still full of food.
He didn't know what to do. Neither did I.
It was the most embarrassing moment of my life.
